The 4.6km Calico Trail is a great way to kick off the morning. The walk starts at Granny’s Beach, one of the many stunning beaches at the heart of Port Denison, and heads north along Point Leander Drive. Before setting off, you can grab a freshly roasted coffee at The Green Beanie and soak in the beauty of the ocean vista from the comfort of a giant bean bag on the grassed reserve.

Installed along the Calico Trail are a number of totems at 500m intervals. These are integrated with the ‘Calico’ smartphone app and use GPS technology to keep track of your walk, run or cycle along the path – a simple and convenient way to keep track of your fitness goals.

If you’re interested in exploring more of the town you might be interested in taking a brief detour and swinging by the heritage listed Russ Cottage. The cottage offers a fascinating glimpse into the home life of a local around 145 years ago.

The next step on the trail is to turn left down the aptly named Ocean Drive which takes you along the coast and back to the starting point at Granny’s Beach. Make sure you stop by the boardwalk and climb the lookout for a breathtaking view overlooking the the Indian Ocean and Irwin River estuary. Immersed in history, the river was the site of the first port, the original harbourmaster’s house, and the wreck of the Albatross in 1868.
